Luka Doncic trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in February shook the very foundations of the NBA. What once seemed impossible materialized in a historic deal that brought the 2023-24 scoring champion to the Los Angeles franchise.

The move included sending Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a valuable draft pick to the Dallas Mavericks, making it clear that the Lakers were going all-in on Doncic as the new face of the project.

The Slovenian guard soon signed a three-year, $165 million contract, cementing his commitment to the purple and gold.

Expectations are sky-high, Doncic will not only have to lead the team on the court but also shoulder the media pressure of a city used to legendary icons.

Alarm in Slovenia: Luka Doncic unexpected exit

In the buildup to EuroBasket 2025, an unexpected scare surfaced. Doncic, wearing his national team’s jersey, was forced to leave a friendly game against Latvia after suffering a knee hit.

The sight of the Lakers star walking off the court immediately set off alarms both in Los Angeles and across Europe.

Up until that moment, Luka Doncic had been dazzling with 26 points and five assists in the first half. But a collision with a teammate forced him to ask for a substitution.

Fears of a serious injury spread quickly on social media, fueling uncertainty about his physical condition. Fortunately, reports after the game eased the concerns. NBA reporter Marc Stein confirmed it was only a knee contusion with no major severity.

Hours later, the Slovenian Basketball Federation reassured fans, confirming that Luka Doncic was fit and would continue training ahead of the tournament.

Maximum expectations heading into EuroBasket 2025

The big question now is whether Doncic will see playing time in the upcoming friendly against Great Britain at Arena Stožice.

While all signs point to the injury being nothing more than a bruise, the coaching staff might choose to rest him to avoid unnecessary risks.

EuroBasket 2025 will run from August 27 to September 4, with Slovenia placed in Group D. With Doncic as captain and undisputed leader, the national team is dreaming of repeating past glories.
