Sophie Cunningham reveals her “worst nightmare” in the WNBA
Without hesitation, she named Jonquel Jones, the New York Liberty star and recent Finals MVP. With a two-year, $385,000 contract, Jones has proven to be an almost unstoppable presence on the court.
“When I think of players I have no chance against, I’d say Jonquel Jones from New York,” Cunningham admitted. “She’s so strong and tall. Sometimes they put me in the small forward position to guard her, and it’s never good.”

Jonquel Jones: Cunningham toughest defensive challenge
Jonquel Jones has earned her reputation as one of the WNBA most intimidating forwards. Standing 6’6” (1.98 m), her combination of strength and mobility makes her a challenge even for the most experienced defenses.
This season, she’s averaging 14.4 points on 50.2% shooting from the field, including an impressive 44.1% from three-point range, along with 8.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.
Her ability to dominate in the post and move with agility creates a constant headache for guards and forwards trying to stop her, including Sophie Cunningham.
Cunningham injury and the playoff battle
As the Indiana Fever performed strongly after the All-Star break, Sophie Cunningham took on an even bigger role due to Caitlin Clark absence.
Her performance was key in helping the team climb the standings and approach a coveted playoff spot.
However, an injury that ended Sophie Cunningham season has complicated the team’s aspirations. Currently, the Fever sit in eighth place and need to win at least two of their remaining three games to secure a postseason berth.
