Bonner joined the Fever on a one-season deal. Over the past five years, she was part of the Sun, where she averaged 15.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. The 37-year-old athlete was also selected three times for the All-Star Game while playing for Connecticut.
Throughout her career, Bonner has been a six-time All-Star. Additionally, she has won the WNBA championship twice, securing the title with the Phoenix Mercury in 2009 and 2014.
Official presentation of Bonner as a Fever player
However, when the franchise shared a clip of her statement on social media, it sparked a wave of criticism. The experienced WNBA player was referring to Kelsey Mitchell, Lexie Hull, and Aliyah Boston, leading fans to believe she was snubbing Caitlin Clark.
“Playing with Kelsey [Mitchell], Lexie Hull, and [Aliyah Boston] will make scoring easy,” Bonner said in the quote posted by the Fever.
“I want to win a championship.”
DeWanna Bonner comes to the Fever as a massive free agent signing – the 37-year-old is a bona fide star and won two WNBA championships with the Phoenix Mercury in 2009 and 2014.

Fans defend Caitlin Clark
“Yeah, I was really happy she came here. But by leaving CC out of that statement, she can leave,” said one critic, believing Bonner intentionally excluded Clark. Another added, “Ummm, she’s already hating on Caitlin, not good.”
Another fan argued that if she didn’t mention Clark, she shouldn’t have named anyone else. “Caitlin Clark is the most important one to help you score… none of the others will,” commented another user on social media.
However, other Fever fans quickly came to DeWanna Bonner’s defense, pointing out that the team’s post did not reflect the entirety of her statements. In fact, during the same press conference, Bonner praised Clark and expressed her desire to share her experience with her as a player.
