Angel Reese in the eye of the storm: racial controversy and tensions in the Chicago Sky
However, her comments led the Sky to suspend her for the first half of the game against the Las Vegas Aces.
Fans were quick to criticize her, while Reese maintained that her words had been taken out of context.
Andrew Haubner, co-host of No Cap Space WBB, offered a reflective perspective: “When you are a 23-year-old Black woman, like Angel Reese, you face a level of scrutiny that someone like Kim Mulkey does not experience due to her skin color, age, and the times we live in.”
“Angel Reese really reminds me of Kim Mulkey.”
“AR doesn’t get the same pass Mulkey does, because she’s Black.”

Comparison with Kim Mulkey and the weight of success
Haubner compared Reese to her former LSU coach, Kim Mulkey, highlighting that both are highly competitive and direct.
“Both are unafraid to tell people what they think or how things should be done,” he said. However, he noted that Reese does not enjoy the same freedom as Mulkey due to racial and generational differences.
After the Chicago Sky 88-64 victory over the Connecticut Sun, Reese confirmed that she had already apologized to her teammates, although team management decided to maintain the suspension, according to Marsh.
The NCAA champions legacy: Reese and Mulkey
The partnership between Reese and Mulkey reached its peak in 2023, when they led LSU to the NCAA championship.
With a 15-1 record, the Tigers defeated Iowa 102-85 in a historic matchup against Caitlin Clark.
Angel Reese recorded 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one block, earning the Most Outstanding Player award.
This victory marked LSU’s first women’s basketball championship and cemented Mulkey as a winning coach. Bringing her total titles to four, including the three she had previously won with Baylor.
