Argentina’s national team took the field without their captain, Lionel Messi, in the latest South American qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Sidelined by an adductor muscle injury, Lio stayed in Miami, where his interactions with fans created buzz on social media.

Though he couldn’t join the squad for two crucial matches, fans flooded social platforms with videos of their fun encounters with Messi in Miami.

Messi goes viral

While Argentina prepared for their match against Uruguay, Messi was spotted cruising the streets of Miami. Two young fans approached his car, offering the soccer legend a pair of gifts—some alfajores and a jersey to sign.

One of them also handed Messi a ball for his autograph. However, it was their playful farewell that stole the show. As they said goodbye, one fan jokingly commented, “Thank you, Leo, have a great day—and nice haircut!”

Another viral video captured Messi crossing paths with a group of excited women. Driving his car, he waved politely at them before lowering his window to flash a warm smile. The women, overwhelmed with excitement, pleaded, “Leo, say something, please! I can’t believe this.”

Messi asked if they were from Argentina, prompting one woman to exclaim, “Leo, I need your answer.” His puzzled response—“Answer to what?”—only added to the suspense. She finally asked, “Is everything okay?” With a grin, Messi replied, “Yes, everything’s fine.”

“Vamos Argentina” despite injury

This weekend’s qualifiers feature a packed schedule for South American teams. However, Messi had to step aside from the matches, a decision prompted by his minor but limiting injury.

Messi took to social media to express his disappointment at missing the games while cheering on his teammates from afar. “¡Vamos Argentina!” he wrote, showing his unwavering support.

Despite Messi’s absence, Argentina managed a narrow 1-0 victory over Uruguay. Now, all eyes turn to the highly anticipated clash with Brazil on Tuesday, with Lio likely watching from Miami, longing to be on the pitch.
