Initially, the Cowboys saw Lance as a potential alternative to Dak Prescott, in case contract negotiations with their star quarterback became complicated. However, that plan never came to fruition.
When it became clear that Lance had no future as a starter in Dallas, there was still hope that he could establish himself as the primary backup or, at least, become an attractive trade asset.
But that possibility quickly faded. Throughout the 2024 season, Lance was relegated to the third spot on the depth chart, behind Prescott and Cooper Rush, with little interest from other teams in acquiring him via trade.
Looks like the Trey Lance experiment is coming to an end…..

Dallas Cowboys close their chapter with Trey Lance
Selected third overall in the 2021 Draft by the 49ers, Lance arrived at the Dallas Cowboys hoping to revive his career. However, his impact on the field was minimal. In four appearances with the team, he completed just 25 of 41 passes for 266 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. His only start came in Week 18 against Washington, in a 23-19 loss.
Now, with free agency around the corner, the Cowboys have decided to close the chapter with Lance. Team vice president Stephen Jones confirmed to the Dallas Morning News that the quarterback will not be returning to Dallas.
“We gave Trey an opportunity, and we wanted to do that… But now that Dak has signed a long-term contract, I think he’ll probably look for something else,” Jones stated.
Despite Lance departure, the Cowboys are still looking to reinforce the quarterback position. Jones made it clear that the team plans to search for a young passer in the upcoming draft, though he admitted that finding one in the middle rounds has become more difficult.
It seems the Trey Lance experiment has come to an end in Dallas, leaving more questions than answers about his future in the NFL.
