The Dallas Cowboys face a dilemma they can’t ignore: Who will back up Dak Prescott in the 2025 season? With Cooper Rush’s departure and a lack of depth at quarterback, relying solely on Will Grier could be a risky gamble.

Given this situation, the franchise must explore strategic options in free agency and the draft to ensure their star quarterback has a reliable backup.

Three quarterbacks the Dallas Cowboys should consider as Dak Prescott backup

The Cowboys don’t need a new starter but rather an experienced backup or a young talent with potential. Here are three options that could be the missing piece in Dallas puzzle.

Joe Flacco: experience and reliability in free agency

If the Cowboys want a veteran who thrives in high-pressure moments, Joe Flacco is their best available option. The former Super Bowl MVP has proven he can still step up when needed.

In his last season with the Indianapolis Colts, Flacco completed 65.3% of his passes for 1,761 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in eight games. His locker room leadership and ability to handle pressure make him a safe bet for Dallas.

Will Howard: a young talent with huge potential

If the Cowboys prefer to invest in the future, Will Howard from Ohio State could be the perfect draft pick. Howard led the Buckeyes to a national championship in 2024 and has the tools to develop into a solid NFL quarterback.

Last season, he recorded 4,010 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions while completing an impressive 73.1% of his throws. With the right coaching, he could be a viable emergency option.

Dillon Gabriel: a hidden gem in the draft

Another intriguing candidate is Dillon Gabriel from the Oregon Ducks. Despite posting strong numbers in 2024 (3,857 yards, 30 touchdowns, and only six interceptions), he hasn’t received much draft attention.

His versatility and ability to make plays on the ground (149 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns) could add an extra dimension to Cowboys offense.

With these three options on the table, the Cowboys have a prime opportunity to bolster their roster and ensure they’re prepared if Prescott ever needs a backup. The decision is in their hands.
