The pressure on Patrick Mahomes rises following Andy Reid decision, due to the Chiefs defensive injuries. A chill was felt at Arrowhead Stadium this week, but it wasn’t from Missouri’s weather.

Attention turned to Andy Reid press conference, where he took the podium and read the list of injured players.

Suddenly, Kansas City priorities shifted: it was no longer just about the offense, but the defense’s ability to hold the line.

And when the defense falters, everyone knows who takes on the extra burden: number 15, Patrick Mahomes.

After the loss to the Seahawks, Andy Reid postgame update set off alarms. Coaches listed five key defenders as questionable: linebacker Jack Cochrane (knee), safeties Nazeeh Johnson (shoulder) and Mike Edwards (hamstring), cornerback Nohl Williams (concussion), and edge rusher Felix Anudike-Uzomah (hamstring).

For Mahomes and the Chiefs, this means facing early preseason pressure that could foreshadow challenges throughout the season.

Why Mahomes feels the pressure

The reason is clear. The Chiefs offense still has unfinished business. Last season, they finished 17th in total yards and 15th in points, a performance that raised concerns ahead of training camp.

Although Mahomes threw for 3,928 yards, with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, fans did not see the dominant version they are accustomed to.

Every defensive injury in August increases the star quarterback’s responsibility, as he must compensate for any weaknesses while the secondary recovers.

The defense also took hits in key areas: depth at safety, the development of rookie cornerbacks, and pass-rush pressure from the edge.

If Edwards and Johnson are sidelined, Bryan Cook will shoulder more defensive responsibility from the start.

The partial absence of Anudike-Uzomah increases pressure on the Omenihu-Karlaftis duo to generate pressure without compromising third-down defense.

Key preseason strategic adjustments

For defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, August becomes a critical period for adjustments. Every player combination and rotation is vital, and the offense must adapt to a weakened defense.
