It may sound contradictory, but Cooper Flagg shared a statement with The Athletic that did not go unnoticed. The presumed frontrunner for the No. 1 overall draft pick made a remark that was both understated and impactful. Can a “silent statement” truly exist?
At just 18 years old and in his first season, his destiny at the top of the NBA Draft seems all but sealed… as long as he decides to take the leap.
They have labeled him as the one-and-done talent who could define an era. People already mention his name alongside legends like Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony.. Meanwhile, some franchises have begun making moves behind the scenes, setting the stage to secure Flagg in the NBA.
But what if, at the end of the season with Duke, he chooses not to enter the draft and instead returns to Durham, North Carolina? A possibility that, until a week ago, seemed unthinkable.

Flagg living up to expectations

Cooper Flagg has not only met expectations but has exceeded every prediction, leaving an indelible mark.
On Tuesday afternoon, The Athletic published an article about Flagg, and within its lines, without much noise, he made a statement that echoed loudly. “I want to come back next year,” Cooper admitted. Meanwhile, Duke has stormed through the season with a blazing 20-3 start, securing the third spot in the AP rankings and currently leading the ACC.
All signs point to the tournament being the stage for a standout performance, with Flagg emerging as the next freshman to capture his first championship—unless, of course, he chooses an unexpected return.
If his words to The Athletic hold true, this could be just the beginning of his story in Durham. “I’ve always wanted to play at the highest level in college and compete for a national championship,” Flagg revealed.
