Public challenge
Walker didn’t stop at criticism. He publicly challenged Luka Doncic to prove he’s not only in shape but also mentally ready to defend. “Getting in shape is one thing. Having the mindset to play defense is another,” Walker said.
And Luka Doncic has definitely worked on his shape. The Slovenian reportedly dropped nearly 20 pounds in two months, thanks to a gluten-free, sugar-free diet and intermittent fasting, as highlighted in Men’s Health. His transformation was so striking that he landed on the magazine’s cover. But beyond the aesthetics, the real question is whether this new physique will translate into better defense.
Luka Doncic seems aware of that. In a recent press conference, he acknowledged that the arrival of Marcus Smart—former Defensive Player of the Year and now his Lakers teammate—will be crucial in that area. “Marcus is going to teach me some things. That’s going to help a lot,” Doncic said, who also played a key role in recruiting the veteran guard.
New chapter
Marcus Smart confirmed that it was Luka Doncic who convinced him to join the Lakers project. “When someone like Luka calls and says he needs your help, that means a lot,” said the former Celtics player.
Going back to Walker’s criticism, it’s no secret that defense has been Luka Doncic’s Achilles heel—both in Dallas and now in Los Angeles. His defensive performance during the 2025 playoffs was heavily criticized, especially in the series against Minnesota. But with a roster that now includes Austin Reaves, a 40-year-old LeBron James, and newly acquired Deandre Ayton. Doncic improving on both ends of the court is no longer optional—it’s essential.
Luka Doncic is one of the NBA’s elite talents. But if he truly wants to be “the guy who brought championships to Los Angeles,” as he stated in an official team video, he’ll need to step up defensively too. The challenge has been issued. And this season, there are no excuses.
