A debut with personality: Cooper Flagg and Dallas rookies stun the Lakers in Las Vegas
Nembhard takes the reins, Kelly Finds his Rhythm
The one who truly took control was Ryan Nembhard. Despite going undrafted, the point guard signed a two-way contract with the Mavericks and made the most of his opportunity.

With 21 points and five assists, he emerged as Dallas primary offensive engine and an unexpected spark that shifted the game’s momentum. His court vision, composure in the halfcourt, and determination in clutch moments, including a critical three-pointer, gave the Lakers plenty of trouble.
Miles Kelly, meanwhile, started slow but found his groove. The Auburn shooting guard sank three three-pointers and contributed 17 key points, helping to keep Dallas Mavericks afloat when Cooper Flagg was struggling to score.
His athleticism and confidence to shoot without hesitation could make him a valuable piece in the Mavericks rotation moving forward.
A win that sparks expectations
Although the final score was close, the 89–87 win over the Lakers meant much more than just a number. The performance of the rookies fuels high hopes among a fanbase excited about the team’s rebuilding process.
Cooper Flagg showed character beyond his shooting percentages, Nembhard looked every bit the NBA player from day one, and Kelly proved he can compete at the highest level.
With this blend of youth, character, and potential, the future in Dallas looks to be in good hands, with Cooper Flagg leading the way.
