Cooper Flagg has begun his NBA career with a clear statement of intent. After two preseason games, the Dallas Mavericks rookie is already showing why he was selected as the first overall pick in the 2025 draft.

Despite the 120-116 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, Flagg remains focused on finding ways to contribute to the team, particularly in improving chemistry with Anthony Davis.

In his second game, Cooper Flagg recorded 11 points, four assists, three rebounds, three steals, and five turnovers.

“I have to find ways to help AD more, play better with him, and help him impact the game when he’s posting up, running isolations, and all that,” Flagg said after the game.

With Davis contributing 12 points and four rebounds, the synergy between the two players will be key for the Mavericks to aim higher this season.

Cooper Flagg emphasizes communication and defense as keys to success

Beyond his statistics, Cooper Flagg knows his impact on the team will depend on his ability to communicate on the court.

In an interview with Kelly Iko of Yahoo! Sports, Flagg highlighted the importance of communication and dedication to playing with intensity on both ends of the floor.

“Having five players on the court communicating and committing to stopping every possession. It’s a different terminology, you just have to get used to it,” he explained.

Cooper Flagg acknowledged that he is still adjusting to NBA terminology, leaving behind his habits from Duke. But stressed that any communication is better than none.

His focus on defensive cohesion is vital for the Mavericks, who ranked 20th in defensive efficiency last season. Paired with Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II, and Daniel Gafford, Dallas aims to transform into a much stronger defensive unit.

Cooper Flagg versatility on both ends of the court and his physical size make him a key piece in the Mavericks rotation.

As the preseason progresses, his ability to lead, communicate, and adapt will determine the difference between a promising team and a true contender in the 2025-26 season.

With every game, Cooper Flagg shows that his leadership and skills could redefine the Mavericks trajectory.
