Las Vegas is buzzing once again, not because of a world title bout or a rising star, but because two legends of the sport might cross paths for a rematch. Floyd Mayweather, the undefeated mastermind of the ring, could step out of retirement and face Manny Pacquiao again—and the rumors are flying as fast as his jabs.

It all began with a quiet visit. As reported by Essentiallysports, boxing journalist Lance Pugmire—recipient of the 2022 Nat Fleischer Award—shared on X that he stopped by the Floyd Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas. The scoop? Mayweather will be in attendance at the MGM Grand to watch Pacquiao’s fight against Mario Barrios. And according to people in Floyd’s inner circle, discussions have already begun. “If Manny wins, this rematch could be worth billions,” one source said.

A Rematch worth billions

But this story isn’t just about money. For Floyd Mayweather, motivation and legacy are intertwined. The boxer retired with a perfect 50-0 record, which still stands untouched. Though he’s appeared in exhibition matches, an official rematch against Pacquiao would be historic—and draw massive global attention. Especially if his former opponent reclaims the WBC welterweight title in this new chapter of his career.

Meanwhile, the Filipino fighter steps into the ring once again on July 19, facing Barrios in a high-stakes battle that could pave the way for a new showdown with Floyd Mayweather. Since losing to the American back in 2015, the taste has remained bitter.

At the time, Pacquiao entered the fight with a torn right shoulder rotator cuff, which heavily impacted his performance against Floyd Mayweather. Years later, the boxer hasn’t hidden his desire for redemption—and this time, he’s fighting not just for the belt, but for the chance to rewrite his narrative.

Welterweight king

Mario Barrios, for his part, isn’t interested in being a stepping stone for someone else’s saga. The Texan acknowledges Pacquiao’s greatness, but insists he won’t treat him like a living monument. “At the end of the day, he’s just another man trying to take my title,” Barrios declared. His mindset leaves no room for nostalgia.

If Pacquiao wins, he’ll become the oldest WBC welterweight champion in history. But more than that, he’ll flick the emotional switch for Floyd Mayweather—who’s watching closely. The possibility of a second war in the ring is now more real than ever.
