The neglected defense that worries everyone
Stephen A. Smith didn’t hold back when he called the Cowboys owner and general manager “delusional.”
“Jerry, what are you doing? What kind of stupid comment is that? You can’t do that! If the Dallas Cowboys don’t make the playoffs because you failed to fix a defense that was clearly compromised, they’re going to cling to that statement, Jerry,” Smith said on First Take.
The journalist was referring to Jones recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, in which he admitted to focusing on a gas exploration deal worth up to $100 billion—while the team’s defense continues to struggle.

Smith pointed out how absurd those priorities are, especially midseason, and questioned how a team with such a prolific offense could afford to neglect its defensive side.
Stephen A. Smith praises Dak Prescott
Stephen A. Smith also praised Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense, calling them one of the most effective in the NFL and recognizing the quarterback’s merit as an MVP contender.
However, Smith emphasized that Prescott’s success could be overshadowed if Jerry Jones fails to act quickly to reinforce the defense.
The analyst reiterated that if Jones doesn’t make changes before the trade deadline, fans, journalists, and experts will remember his comments about the billion-dollar deal—adding even more pressure on the owner.
For now, Jones insists he’s searching for the right player and a fair deal, fully aware that other teams will try to capitalize on the two first-round picks he acquired after trading Micah Parsons.
