For Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, the 2025 NFL season is shaping up to be a crucial one.

After a painful hamstring injury sidelined him for the final stretch of 2024, many questioned whether Dak Prescott would ever return to peak form.

However, the period of doubt may be nearing its end. Because beyond his physical comeback, the quarterback has unfinished business with the franchise’s history, to surpass the legendary Troy Aikman in career completions.

Is Aikman legacy in danger? Dak Prescott nears a historic NFL milestone

Dak Prescott has recorded 2,780 career completions so far, putting him just 119 shy of Aikman 2,898, a Cowboys icon of the 1990s.

As long as Prescott stays healthy and consistent, that milestone seems inevitable. And it’s not just a number. Surpassing Aikman would place Prescott in the top 35 all-time in NFL completions, further cementing his name among the greats.

Week 6: the date circled to make history

With an average of 22.7 completions per game, all signs point to Dak Prescott breaking Aikman mark in Week 6, when the Cowboys travel to face the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium on October 12.

That game could mark the beginning of a new golden chapter in the history of America’s Team.

But the climb doesn’t stop there. With a full and healthy campaign, Prescott is also on pace to surpass another franchise icon, Tony Romo, and potentially finish the year among the top 30 quarterbacks in NFL history.

His career pace of roughly 387 completions per season projects him to reach a total of 3,167, which would also push him past quarterbacks like Ryan Tannehill and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Dak Prescott, often criticized for his lack of playoff success, has maintained a strong .623 winning percentage and has led the Cowboys to multiple double-digit win seasons.

Prescott legacy, still unfolding, could ultimately become the most dominant the franchise has seen in decades.
