Lionel Messi, star of Inter Miami CF and reigning MVP of Major League Soccer, has received an unexpected sanction following the electrifying 2025 season opener against New York City FC.
Despite playing a crucial role in the 2-2 draw with two brilliant assists, the Argentine icon found himself at the center of controversy, ultimately leading to a league-imposed punishment.

The match, already intense due to Tomás Avilés’ red card that left Inter Miami with 10 players, ended in chaos with heated exchanges between players, referees, and coaching staff.

Amid the turmoil, Messi was involved in two incidents that caught the attention of the MLS Disciplinary Committee: a heated protest against the referee and physical contact with NYCFC assistant coach Mehdi Ballouchy, whom he touched on the back of the neck.

After reviewing the incidents, MLS fined Lionel Messi an undisclosed amount for “violating the policy on touching an opponent’s face, head, or neck,” making it clear that not even the league’s biggest star is above the rules.
The regulation states that any player who touches an opponent’s head, neck, or face in a way that incites or escalates an altercation will face, at minimum, a financial penalty.

Although the MLS has not disclosed the exact fine amount, it likely won’t significantly impact Lionel Messi. His guaranteed $20.4 million salary—potentially surpassing $50 million with incentives and commercial deals—far exceeds the total payroll of 22 MLS teams.
This marks the first time Lionel Messi has faced disciplinary action since joining Inter Miami in July 2023, setting a precedent for his tenure in the American league.
With this sanction, MLS sends a clear message: not even its biggest superstar is exempt from following the rules.
