Cooper Flagg incredible season has everyone talking about his future, with many expecting the Duke freshman phenom to be the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft. However, Illinois head coach Brad Underwood has a surprising take on what Flagg next move should be.

“Why leave now? Cooper Flagg could earn more in college”

Following Duke dominant 110-67 victory over Illinois, Underwood shocked many with his comments about Flagg future. Despite an outstanding performance—16 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists at Madison Square Garden—the Illinois coach suggested that Flagg might benefit more by staying in college rather than making the leap to the NBA.

“If I were the NCAA or the ACC, I’d be thinking about an NIL deal to keep that guy in school because he represents everything that’s great about our game,” Underwood stated. He even added that Cooper Flagg “could probably make more money here than in the NBA.”
This unusual advice goes beyond what most coaches would say about a player destined for professional stardom. Cooper Flagg raw talent, immense potential, and relentless effort make him a once-in-a-generation talent who already plays at an elite level.

The importance of enjoying the moment

After the game, where Duke proved once again why they are one of the most dominant teams in college basketball, Underwood had a more personal message for Cooper Flagg. “He’s 18 years old. Just an 18-year-old kid. Go have fun. Stay in school and chase a girl,” the coach advised, encouraging Flagg to embrace the college experience before making the jump to the NBA.
Will this be a piece of advice the Maine prodigy takes to heart, or will he continue his unstoppable path to the pros? Only time will tell.
