Travis Kelce didn’t hold back when addressing the controversial departure of Lane Kiffin on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast.

Ole Miss had achieved an 11-1 record and secured a spot in the College Football Playoff, only to see their head coach accept the LSU job before the postseason began.

For Kelce, this type of move puts players in difficult situations and highlights gaps in the regulation of college coaches.

The star receiver criticized the structure of college athletics, noting that the situation in Oxford was exactly the kind of chaos the NCAA should have anticipated years ago.

“Postseason preparation becomes almost unrecognizable when the coaching staff is dismantled and schools have to improvise with whatever they can find,” Kelce said, adding that there should be rules preventing coaches from seeking new opportunities until the season ends.

Postseason preparation at risk, according to Kelce

Travis Kelce argues that players are forced to adapt to scenarios that completely disrupt their training and strategy.

“It’s not just about having extra coaches on the practice team. You have to gather people from across the university or wherever necessary,” he explained, emphasizing how these situations create significant competitive disadvantages.

For Kelce, Kiffin’s departure is not an isolated incident. The repetition of such events demonstrates the need for structural reform in the NCAA.

“It’s a disaster, and it definitely puts the team and players at a disadvantage when you don’t have your head coach. Your offensive coordinator, or your defensive coordinator,” he stressed.

Lessons from past experiences

Travis Kelce also recalled personal experiences with postseason chaos. During a Super Bowl, his own team faced similar situations when staff members left their positions before crucial games.

The improvisation with temporary staff—or even players’ family members—highlighted for Kelce the urgency of clearer rules.

Travis Kelce message is clear, players’ talent should not be compromised by coaches’ mobility. And the NCAA needs to set clear limits to protect competitive integrity.
