The WNBA is going through an uncomfortable moment that has nothing to do with athletic performance. In less than a week, two Golden State Valkyrie games were interrupted by a gesture that’s as absurd as it is concerning. Fans threw sex toys onto the court. What started as an isolated incident has turned into a trend that WNBA players are no longer willing to tolerate.

The first incident happened during the Valkyrie’s 77-75 win over the Atlanta Dream in College Park. The second came just days later, in their 76-66 victory over the Chicago Sky. In both cases, WNBA officials or security staff removed the objects, but the symbolic damage was already done. The images went viral, and the backlash was immediate.

Offensive acts

Elizabeth Williams, center for the Chicago Sky, didn’t hold back in the postgame press conference. “It’s incredibly disrespectful. I don’t get it. It’s very immature,” she said firmly. Valkyrie forward Cecilia Zandalasini also spoke out: “It was super dangerous.” Both agreed that these acts are not only offensive but also pose a physical risk to WNBA players.

The WNBA has spent years building its place in professional sports, fighting stereotypes, wage gaps, and lack of visibility. Having to deal with this kind of provocation during games is a setback that cannot be normalized.

Social media reactions

According to The Sun, the incidents at WNBA games have sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Many fans are calling for harsher penalties for those who disrupt the game with offensive behavior. The league has yet to issue an official statement, but it’s expected to tighten security measures and review stadium entry protocols.

WNBA players and many fans agree: this league is not a stage for cheap laughs or vulgar stunts. It’s a professional competition that deserves respect. And if some fans still don’t get that, maybe it’s time they grow up—or stay home and watch the game from their couch.
