Sophie Cunningham may not be on the court, but she’s still very much part of the team. The Indiana Fever guard is working through a knee injury that has kept her sidelined during a season that was already uphill for the franchise. In the middle of a wave of injuries that disrupted the locker room, Cunningham gave fans an update through her podcast “Show Me Something.”

“I took the cast off without a prescription. But I went in for a checkup and they told me, ‘You’re progressing really well and you look great… I can bend it beyond what they ask, but it’s not the same as my other leg.’”.  Said Sophie Cunningham

Outlets like EssentiallySports picked up her comments and made it clear. Sophie Cunningham is focused on coming back, and she hasn’t lost her spark or commitment. Meanwhile, Indiana Fever has had to adapt on the fly. Medical absences forced the coaching staff to reshuffle rotations, redefine roles, and rethink strategy. But losing Sophie Cunningham has impacted more than just the playbook. Her intensity, leadership, and contagious energy are hard to replace. Even from the bench, she’s remained a vocal presence, supporting teammates and keeping the competitive spirit alive.

A complex injury, but recovery is underway

Sophie Cunningham’s injury came at a pivotal moment—just as Indiana was trying to find rhythm and climb the WNBA standings. Before going down, she was averaging around 10 points per game, shooting efficiently from deep and playing aggressive defense that rattled opponents. But beyond the stats, her emotional impact on the team was undeniable.

Despite the setback, Sophie Cunningham has handled the process with maturity, expressing gratitude for the support and staying focused on returning stronger. There’s no official timeline for her comeback, but the Fever organization believes her recovery is heading in the right direction. And when she’s back, she’ll be all in.

A team stretched thin

In the meantime, Indiana Fever has leaned on players like Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. Both have stepped up, along with others, taking on more responsibility. The team has shown flashes of solid basketball despite the adversity.

In the WNBA, intangibles matter. And Sophie Cunningham, even while injured, remains one of Indiana Fever’s most valuable engines. She’s upbeat and pushing through this final phase of rehab to get back on the floor. If all goes well, she could be ready to rejoin the Fever next season.
