Indiana Fever closed the year in unusual fashion: no games left to play, but the city is still buzzing after the franchise’s best season in a decade. The team reached the 2025 WNBA semifinals, won the Commissioner’s Cup, and set a historic record of 24 victories. After that achievement, fans made one request during the offseason: they want Sophie Cunningham back.

The Fever accomplished all of this despite multiple season-ending injuries. Among the players who fueled the team’s rise, Cunningham emerged as a fan favorite.

A fan base mobilized in the offseason

According to Athlonsports, the Fever posted their season recap on social media, and it sparked a flood of comments from fans. The message was clear and unanimous: Indiana must re-sign Cunningham for 2026. Supporters filled the team’s official platforms with pleas, praise and passion for the 29-year-old guard.

“Please bring Sophie back!”, “Please keep her!”, and “I fell in love with basketball again because of Sophie. I can’t wait for next season! Please re-sign her!” were some of the reactions that stood out.

Known as “The Enforcer” for her intensity and competitive spirit, Cunningham averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game before tearing her MCL in August. The injury halted what looked like her strongest season yet, but it didn’t stop her impact on the court or in the community. Beyond her game, she has become one of the most marketable players in the WNBA, a valuable asset for a league experiencing rapid growth.

However, her contractual situation presents a challenge. Cunningham is a free agent, and the current CBA expires on October 31, with a significant salary increase expected in the next agreement. That places players like her in a strong position to negotiate their future.

Indiana Fever must now decide whether to re-sign a beloved player recovering from a recent injury or prioritize other roster needs in free agency. Cunningham, meanwhile, remains focused on her rehab and has not announced whether she will play overseas before the 2026 WNBA season.

What she did make clear in her exit interview is that her time in Indiana has been special. And when it comes to emotion, the fans have already spoken: they want her in a Fever uniform again
