The current debate over WNBA leadership centers on Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Public attention also focuses on the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and the NBA’s supervisory role. Recently, WNBA legend Candace Parker surprised fans by sharing her perspective.
Before Game 1 of the Finals, Engelbert addressed public concerns and promised to improve relations in the WNBA. She said, “If players in the W feel unappreciated and undervalued by the league, we have to do better, and I have to do better.”
Comparing commissioners: Candace Parker speaks out
According to Athlonsports, Parker discussed Engelbert’s leadership on her podcast Post Moves with Aliyah Boston of the Indiana Fever. Parker also shared her views on NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
She explained, “Here’s the thing. I signed a deal to broadcast for Amazon. I got a text from Adam Silver congratulating me. I had my third child, and Adam Silver sent me a text about my baby… He even sent a gift. I get a Christmas gift from Adam Silver every year. When I retired, Adam Silver texted me, congratulating me on my career and all I’ve done for women’s basketball, and he looked forward to what I’d do from the bench. I haven’t heard from Cathy [Engelbert].”
Parker added, “You heard Sabrina Ionescu hint at this: ‘I have a better relationship with Adam Silver than with Cathy [Engelbert].’ I get that Cathy represents the owners… but you still need to connect with players and maintain a relationship, and I’m not sure anyone can say she’s done a great job at that.”
Engelbert remains one of the least appreciated figures among WNBA players, especially compared to the NBA commissioner. The league faces immense pressure as discussions over the collective bargaining agreement continue, with players pushing for more influence and recognition.
