Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes openly supported Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks for the upcoming season without Luka Doncic.
Mahomes, who was born in Texas, has long been a passionate fan of the Mavericks, largely due to his home state roots. He even built a close connection with Luka Doncic, the former Dallas star.
Last season, fans were shocked when the Mavericks traded Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers—a move widely regarded as one of the biggest NBA trades in recent history.
Despite the loss, the Mavericks secured the No. 1 pick in the Draft and selected college basketball star Cooper Flagg. Mahomes has closely followed Flagg’s journey, even during his time with the Duke Blue Devils.

What does Mahomes think of Cooper Flagg?
On the “Up and Adam Show,” the Chiefs quarterback shared his thoughts:
“I’m kind of a low-key Duke fan. Growing up, I watched JJ Redick, Sheldon Williams—you know, all those guys from my childhood. But now I’m obviously a Texas Tech fan. Still, I watched Cooper Flagg last year. He’s a great player, and I was extremely excited when he joined the Mavs.”
When asked about Doncic’s absence, Mahomes made his stance clear:
“We’re going to have to do a lot of work. [Flagg] is going to have to keep getting better and better. I still love my guy Luka, no matter what, so I’ll keep supporting him too. But my man [Flagg] has a shot. Man, we’ve got something—we’ve got some hope again in Dallas.”
According to current odds, Cooper Flagg is a top favorite to win the 2025–26 NBA Rookie of the Year award, holding a strong -190 line. No wonder Mahomes is one of his biggest fans.
