Messi or Ronaldo?” That’s arguably the most hotly debated topic in modern football. Both athletes are icons, yet ever since their careers began, fans have been divided over who takes the crown. Now, Prince William of England has thrown his hat into the ring, offering an intriguing perspective.

As the heir to the English throne, Prince William Windsor isn’t a stranger to the world of football. After all, his country hosts one of Europe’s most competitive leagues, where Ronaldo once left his mark—unlike Messi, who never played in the Premier League.

the Prince William’s decision: Messi or Ronaldo?

It’s a question every football enthusiast faces sooner or later, and Aston Villa player Tyrone Mings put it to Prince William during an interview for The Sun. Among several queries, the most fiery was the eternal Messi vs. Ronaldo debate.

Ever the football fan, Prince William hesitated briefly between Messi and the Portuguese star. But ultimately, he sided with the Argentine champion.

“Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi?” “I have to go with Messi, simply,” replied the Prince of Wales.

More questions, more opinions

But that wasn’t the only football-related query. Along with choosing Messi as his favorite, Mings asked him to weigh in on other iconic stars. When it came to the best penalty taker—Zinedine Zidane or David Beckham—Prince William picked his compatriot and the current Inter Miami owner, Beckham.

However, when asked about his favorite goal celebration, Messi was momentarily forgotten. The Prince William revealed that Ronaldo’s iconic celebration is his top pick. “Well, I suppose the most iconic one has to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s,” he said, even admitting he’s tried it out a couple of times on the castle grounds.

A loyal football fan

During the interview, Prince William shared that he played a lot of football during his school days. And still takes the chance to kick the ball around whenever his schedule allows. Maybe he doesn’t have Messi or Ronaldo’s skills, but he makes sure to pass the ball around with his kids when he can.

The future king also expressed his love for the game and his unwavering support for Aston Villa. “I didn’t want to follow the usual teams. I wanted a club that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments,” he noted.

Although neither Messi nor Ronaldo played for Aston Villa, the Prince fondly recalled attending matches and experiencing the thrill of football firsthand. “It was fantastic. I sat with all the fans wearing my red beanie, and we had a great time,” he said.

As a true admirer of the sport, Prince William once even considered naming one of his children after a player. Not Messi, but Jack Grealish. However, it remained just an anecdote, likely vetoed by his wife, Kate. Together, they are parents to Louis, George, and Princess Charlotte.
