The professional future of Messi hangs in the balance this year, and the stakes feel higher than ever. Multiple possibilities swirl around the Argentine legend. His contract with Inter Miami is winding down, and so far, there’s been no confirmation of an extension.

In the midst of it all, speculation grows that Messi may want one final dance at Camp Nou. At 38, Lionel Messi is still rewriting the rules. Since his arrival in MLS in 2023, Messi has impacted not only headlines—but the competitive level of his team. Thanks in part to Lionel, Inter Miami celebrated a landmark win over Porto in the Club World Cup, marking the first time the American franchise reached the knockout stage. That victory validated Beckham’s project beyond just the scoreboard.

The extension still missing

Although both sides have expressed interest in continuing the partnership, the silence following Inter Miami’s Club World Cup exit has sparked doubts. Is Lionel Messi waiting for a message from Barcelona? Is Newell’s Old Boys preparing a welcome? There are no official statements yet—only signals. Club president Jorge Mas claims talks are progressing “with good energy,” and player’s circle seems content in Florida. There’s family, calm, and a lifestyle that contrasts the high-octane demands of European football.

One last tango in Barcelona?

Rumors of Messi’s return to Barcelona persist, like a ball circling the box with no clear finisher. The renovation of Camp Nou could offer a poetic setting for a proper farewell. Still, Messi’s past with president Joan Laporta, plus contractual shadows, complicate the story. Lionel left Barça in 2021, visibly heartbroken. That emotional chapter remains unfinished—neither revisited nor fully closed.

The newell’s whispers grow louder

There’s another possibility floating in the rumor mill: Messi could finally join Newell’s Old Boys, the Rosario-based club he’s long adored. A recent tribute, naming a stadium stand after Lionel, signaled Argentina’s enduring hope for a final chapter in red and black.

Lionel is set to return to action when Inter Miami faces Montreal at Saputo Stadium. The result may matter on paper, but the real play will be in the subtext. Will the 10 look like someone staying for extra time—or someone preparing a final bow?
