What started as a routine kickoff to the Club World Cup turned into a medical saga for the French forward. Mbappé, the marquee name at Real Madrid, arrived in the United States already feeling uneasy with stomach cramps—discomfort that escalated and landed the player in a hospital on June 18.

At first, the speculation ran wild. Some feared it was heatstroke, while others suspected appendicitis. Mbappé’s sudden decline raised alarms across Madrid’s camp, casting uncertainty over his role in the tournament. But in the end, the culprit was far simpler—and far less glamorous. The french had suffered bacterial food poisoning from a spoiled serving of chicken.

An illness that cost Mbappé more than time

The visit to the hospital took a toll—not just in downtime, but in physical condition. In the days following his diagnosis and recovery process, Mbappé lost around six and a half kilograms—more than 13 pounds. For a player whose game thrives on burst speed and short-range acceleration, such weight loss wasn’t just a number. It was a real concern for Real Madrid and the player himself.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Mbappé was ruled out of Madrid’s Club World Cup opener. His symptoms, which included fever, nausea, and abdominal pain, even limited his playing time to just 20 minutes in the Round of 16. Clearly, this wasn’t just a minor blip on the fitness radar.

Leaving the scare behind

Thankfully for Madrid—and for his fans—Mbappé’s recovery turned out to be as fast as one of his trademark runs down the wing. In the quarterfinal match against Borussia Dortmund, the Frenchman returned with a goal, proving that while food may have knocked him off balance, it hadn’t dulled his instinct for the net.

Now both Mbappé and Real Madrid are gearing up for the next hurdle: a semifinal clash against PSG. It’s a matchup loaded with emotional subtext, given Kylian’s past as a Parisian icon. All signs point to the striker being part of the starting XI for the big game. The food poisoning scare is behind him. The pounds are coming back. And the rhythm, once again, looks lethal.
