Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs’ leading rusher, expressed concern over the team’s poor performance this season. The Chiefs’ current statistics are far from encouraging, and their star quarterback knows exactly where the weakness lies.
Their recent 31-28 loss to Jacksonville exposed the team’s flaws. Mahomes spoke honestly about the situation, as Kansas City now holds a 2-3 record in the regular NFL season.

Mahomes opens up about his concerns

According to Essentiallysports, when reporters asked Mahomes if he wanted to remain the team’s leading rusher, his response caught everyone off guard. “No matter how we win football games, I don’t care what it looks like,” he said. “But it doesn’t seem to be helping us right now. So if other guys start running and we begin winning games, I’ll gladly accept that.

Mahomes clearly understands that the team’s struggles surround him. The ground game depends almost entirely on him, which has left the franchise with a worrying record. Paradoxically, the Chiefs still outgain opponents 367.4 to 321.4 yards per game, but that hasn’t been enough to secure victories.

The offense averages 120.0 rushing yards per game, yet top running backs Hunt (43 carries) and Pacheco (39 carries) have failed to produce strong numbers. In fact, both have fewer rushing yards than their quarterback. That inefficiency explains Mahomes’ frustration.

“We’re beating ourselves with penalties and mistakes,” Mahomes admitted. “It’s been one guy here or there all season.” He’s right—the Chiefs committed 13 penalties for 109 yards against the Jaguars, a costly mistake that led to their loss after holding a lead.
