A rollercoaster season with a clear goal
Last season was a rollercoaster for the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes threw for 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also ran for 307 yards and added two rushing touchdowns. But injuries to key players like Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, and Jaylen Watson limited the offense. Even so, the Chiefs managed to win 10 games by a single score, thanks to a defense that held firm when the offense struggled.
This year, things look different. Brown, Rice, Xavier Worthy, and JuJu Smith-Schuster stood out during training camp. Rookie Jalen Royals fit perfectly into Andy Reid’s system, and the team retained Kareem Hunt, Isiah Pacheco, and Carson Steele. They also added speedster Brashard Smith, a player who could stretch the field and give Patrick Mahomes more breathing room.

Constant challenges
In the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals, Patrick Mahomes played just 48 seconds. But that was enough to throw a touchdown pass to Jason Brownlee. Although the Chiefs lost 17-20, coach Reid was impressed by rookies Josh Simmons, Ashton Gillotte, and Nohl Williams.
Off the field, Patrick Mahomes has faced personal challenges as well. According to First Sportz, his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., was arrested for driving under the influence. The incident had an emotional impact on the quarterback, who received a direct apology and a promise from his father to stop drinking. Meanwhile, Mahomes celebrated the birth of his third child with Brittany Mahomes, further cementing his role as a leader both on and off the field.
Patrick Mahomes knows the Chiefs aren’t entering the season as defending champions, but they’re still the team everyone wants to beat in the AFC. And judging by his words and mindset, Mahomes isn’t backing down. If his warning holds true, the 2025 Chiefs could be more dangerous than ever.
