In Buffalo, the summer heat isn’t just in the air—it’s burning on the practice field. James Cook, the Bills’ star running back, has yet to show up for training camp as he negotiates a new contract, leaving a noticeable gap in the backfield. But if anyone knows how to turn uncertainty into opportunity, it’s Josh Allen.

Josh Allen hasn’t let the situation turn into drama. In comments reported by ESPN, Allen admitted that Cook’s absence isn’t ideal. Still, he highlighted the value of the reps being picked up by Ray Davis and Ty Johnson. “Guys are stepping up,” Josh Allen said, with the calm of someone who knows every snap matters.

Maximizing every rep

And it looks like Josh Allen is right. According to Athlon Sports, Davis—a rookie out of Kentucky—and Johnson—a veteran with time on the Jets and Lions—are making the most of every play to prove they can be more than just temporary fill-ins. Replicating the 16 touchdowns James Cook scored last season might be a stretch, but offensive coordinator Joe Brady is watching closely.

James Cook’s situation is delicate. After a breakout season that established him as one of the AFC’s most explosive backs, he’s looking to secure a contract that reflects his value. His absence hasn’t gone unnoticed—not by the fans, not by the coaching staff, and certainly not by Josh Allen. While there’s no sign of a full-blown standoff, time is ticking. Buffalo needs clarity before the season kicks off.

Leadership and cohesion

Meanwhile, Josh Allen remains the centerpiece of it all. His leadership shows not just in games, but in how he handles turbulence off the field. With an offense that leans heavily on both the ground game and Josh Allen’s arm, maintaining cohesion is critical. And while James Cook is irreplaceable in many ways, Allen knows the team can’t afford to stall.

In the middle of this uncertain landscape, Josh Allen hasn’t lost faith. “We desperately want James with us,” he said. But he also understands that professional football is a business, and every player has to look out for their future.

So, between negotiations, reps, and quiet confidence, the Bills are still cooking up their recipe for success. And while the main ingredient isn’t in the pot yet, Josh Allen is making sure the fire stays lit.
