What started as another transitional season for the New England Patriots has taken a surprising turn thanks to the rise of Drake Maye. The young quarterback, who entered the NFL with high expectations after his time at North Carolina, is beginning to deliver. In just his second year as a pro, Maye has led the Patriots to a solid 5–2 record. He also matched a historic streak by Patrick Mahomes and broke a franchise record once held by Tom Brady.

In Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans, Drake Maye delivered a stunning performance. He completed 21 of 23 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. His completion rate of 91.3% is now the highest in Patriots history for a quarterback with at least 20 attempts. The previous record belonged to Tom Brady, who hit 88.5% against the Jaguars back in 2009. TheSportsRush highlighted the moment and emphasized its significance.

On Mahomes’ heels

But that wasn’t all. With this game, Drake Maye became just the third quarterback in NFL history—alongside Patrick Mahomes and Dan Marino—to record six consecutive games with over 200 passing yards and a passer rating above 100, all before turning 25. That stat speaks not only to consistency but to competitive maturity.

The turning point came in Week 5, when Drake Maye led the Patriots to hand the Buffalo Bills their first loss of the season. Since then, he’s stacked wins against the Saints and Titans, solidifying his place as one of the breakout stars of the year. While his rookie campaign wasn’t as flashy as CJ Stroud’s or Jayden Daniels’, Maye’s steady rise is now reshaping the AFC East landscape.

MVP race heating up

With New England sitting atop the division. The pressure now shifts to Josh Allen and a Bills team that can’t afford more slip-ups. If Drake Maye keeps this pace, he could not only steal the divisional crown but also crash the MVP conversation.

Even if his performance levels out, Drake Maye has already done something that seemed out of reach since Brady’s departure. He’s given the Patriots a competitive identity again. And in Foxborough, that’s celebrated like a last-second touchdown.
