Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are two quarterbacks projected to go in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. However, teams no longer view them the same way, as rumors suggest a significant gap between the two.

One major reason for this shift is Sanders’ decision to skip the throwing drills at the Combine. By not participating, he may have lost ground while other rising stars captured the attention of NFL franchises.

The differences between Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders

According to NFL insider Peter Schrager, Cam Ward from the Miami Hurricanes has emerged as one of the top quarterback options in the Draft. However, there is a considerable gap between him and Shedeur Sanders. Schrager noted that Sanders’ recent attitude has made it difficult for him to secure a top spot.

Schrager also highlighted the complexity of this year’s quarterback class:
“Cam Ward has a major advantage. Despite his outstanding seasons at Washington State and Miami, he isn’t yet seen in the same category as the top three quarterbacks from the 2024 class.”

Furthermore, Schrager explained that after Ward, there is a noticeable drop-off before considering other prospects like Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, and a group of lesser-known players. He emphasized that “Shedeur is viewed closer to Jaxson Dart than to Cam Ward,” indicating that the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback is losing ground.

Ward gains momentum, Sanders falls behind

Cam Ward impressed NFC executives at the Combine, solidifying his position as a top pick in the 2025 Draft. He capped off his fifth collegiate season with 4,313 passing yards, 39 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions.

Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders failed to generate the same excitement. His attitude has reportedly caused some NFL executives to lose interest. For example, he compared himself to a “program-changer” and displayed arrogance upon arriving at the field—a move that pushed him further away from a top selection rather than drawing interest.

As a result, Sanders could be overtaken by another quarterback in the Draft. One potential candidate is 21-year-old Jaxson Dart, who had an impressive season with the Ole Miss Rebels and is now gaining attention in the NFL.
