Rashee Rice, wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, did not take the field during training camp on Wednesday. This absence has analysts and fans concerned, especially for what it means for Patrick Mahomes.
Unfortunately, Rice’s situation goes beyond an ankle injury. Off the field, he’s facing legal issues, which means the NFL will likely hand him a suspension. That could lead to a longer absence and leave Mahomes with even less support.
A challenging situation for the receiving corps
According to a report by EssentiallySports, Matt Derrick posted on X: “Chiefs WR Rashee Rice is at camp but will not participate Wednesday. Still haven’t seen Hollywood Brown (ankle).”
Rice’s absence adds to Mahomes’ worries. The quarterback already suffered a major blow when Rice missed most of last season after undergoing surgery for a sternoclavicular joint injury. The team re-signed him to a one-year deal for the 2025-26 season, but an injury sidelined him again last Tuesday.

Worse, Rice recently pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony assault charges, tied to a high-speed crash in Dallas. His sentence includes 30 days in jail and five years probation.
Still, Rice has been present at camp and briefly commented: “Honestly, it’s still in the works… My legal team is handling it. All I can do is focus on what I can control right now — and that’s giving my best on the field.”
This situation puts the NFL under pressure to decide quickly, and directly affects Mahomes, as reports point to a possible five-game suspension. Without question, that would be a major setback for the Chiefs.
Now, the franchise must prepare to play without Rice. With Hollywood Brown also out, the Chiefs face a tough challenge. One bright spot: Jalen Royals has started to stand out in camp and might become an unexpected asset.
