Understanding Livvy Dunne’s injury
“It’s an unusual injury; I had to look it up. I didn’t even know what the knee retinaculum was,” Clark confessed. While Dunne is no stranger to injuries, this one presents unique challenges.
“In general terms… the small avulsion fracture she has… She and I were talking about it yesterday. This usually happens to people involved in car accidents or those who’ve experienced blunt force trauma,” Clark explained. He added, “She (Livvy Dunne) can’t recall anything like that happening. It’s an extremely unusual situation, and it just hurts.”
Extreme caution
This rare and peculiar injury will keep Dunne on the sidelines for some time. It’s worth noting that Livvy Dunne hasn’t competed since late January, during LSU’s meet against Arkansas—a match they lost. Since then, the gymnast has been unable to return to action.
Clark further explained that while Livvy Dunne could attempt to compete through the pain, the discomfort is significant. “She could force herself to function with it, but it’s very painful, and we’re trying to figure out how to make her feel comfortable. So, we’ve shut her down and immobilized her, trying to let it calm down. I think there’s been some progress.”
These are encouraging words. It seems LSU’s entire team is doing everything possible to get Livvy Dunne back on the mats. They remain hopeful she could at least compete on bars, but they’re approaching her recovery with caution. “I’m still cautiously optimistic she’ll be available—at least on bars. But it’s hard to say… We have another follow-up this week and are monitoring it. We’re turning over every stone to help her feel comfortable… She started the year in a really good position for us,” the coach concluded.
