Kim Mulkey stands out as one of the NCAA’s star coaches. However, her success isn’t just about game strategy and player selection. Her strong personality has been impossible to ignore since she arrived at LSU.

One of the most striking examples of her tenacity and determination came in 2023 when she needed the Tigers to defeat Michigan to secure their spot in the Sweet 16. However, her players were visibly exhausted, so she had to come up with a strategy that reignited their energy while allowing them some much-needed rest.

A bold decision that shook the entire team

The team’s lack of energy and focus frustrated Kim Mulkey, leading her to make a drastic move—she sent her players home 30 hours before the Michigan game. Yet, the next morning, she still didn’t see the fire in their eyes.

Determined to turn things around, she spoke with associate head coach Bob Starkey. During practice, a player made a mistake, prompting her to yell at Starkey, “You’re still not with me. You’re still not here. Get out!”

As her players hesitated, Mulkey made her stance clear: “Then we’re leaving.” She walked off the court. In response, Angel Reese and Morris rallied the team, leading them on a tour of the coaches’ offices. At that moment, Mulkey smiled and said, “We’re ready.”

That night, Mulkey tested her players’ resilience and toughness, and they responded—dominating Michigan by 24 points. Just 15 days later, LSU won the national championship.

A new challenge, same determination

This season is no different. Kim Mulkey’s influence is everywhere in every game and practice. After graduating their superstar Reese, LSU had to rebuild with a wave of new transfers. Their goal is clear: reach the Final Four.

However, this road won’t be easy. NC State and UCLA stand in their way—two powerhouse teams. Yet, with Kim Mulkey at the helm, there’s no doubt she’s ready for the challenge. After all, her unmatched determination and fiery spirit have made her one of the greatest coaches in LSU history.
