Flau’jae Johnson, one of the leaders of the LSU Tigers, is facing tense days ahead of the 2025–26 college basketball season. While her team focuses on its final exhibition games. The star guard didn’t expect to be caught in a political storm sparked by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry.

Landry posted on X to thank the LSU chapter of Turning Point USA, highlighting the participation of over 1,500 students in a recent event hosted by the conservative organization. Then, in a surprising statement, he publicly challenged LSU to build a statue in honor of Charlie Kirk, the group’s leader.

A request that divides the LSU community

According to Firstsportz, the governor’s comment triggered instant reactions—among them, that of Flau’jae Johnson. The LSU standout responded with a series of confused emojis (????), which many interpreted as a subtle criticism of Landry’s proposal. Her brief reaction quickly sparked debate among students and fans, many of whom questioned the governor’s priorities.

Some critics suggested that Landry should start with his own alma mater before making demands of LSU. Others recalled Kirk’s controversial statements and his right-wing political stance, which many feel doesn’t represent the diversity of the Baton Rouge campus. Amid the backlash, Johnson deleted her post but later addressed the issue again, expressing her continued confusion about the idea.

The young guard, projected as a future 2026 WNBA Draft pick, is now focused on keeping her team grounded. LSU’s goal remains clear: to contend for another NCAA title. Still, the controversy threatens to distract the Tigers right before the season tips off.

Johnson, known for her composure and leadership, is trying to balance her role both on and off the court. Her reaction captures the sentiment of many young athletes who believe college sports should stay separate from partisan politics.
