Paul Pierce, one of the most respected and outspoken voices in American basketball, stirred major controversy with his latest comments about the Los Angeles Lakers. The Hall of Famer claimed that the franchise should consider a bold move: trading LeBron James before his presence limits the team’s progress.
LeBron, currently recovering from a sciatic nerve injury suffered during the preseason, has yet to make his season debut. His absence, however, has opened the door for new faces to shine.
The rise of new stars
According to Firstsportz, James’ absence has allowed players like Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia, and Marcus Smart to take on bigger roles in the rotation. Despite ups and downs, the Lakers sit just half a game out of second place in the Western Conference — proof that the team remains highly competitive even without its biggest star.
Still, LeBron’s return raises questions about how he’ll fit into the team’s current chemistry. Pierce didn’t hold back when he addressed the situation on the No Fouls Given podcast:
“They look good. They need to find a way to trade LeBron. He’s going to hold them back. Luka is the guy. We’ve seen how Reaves has improved… How do you implement LeBron into what they’re doing now?”

Pierce argued that at nearly 41 years old, LeBron no longer delivers the same offensive impact and that his playing style could slow the game down. “He’s not a consistent shooter, and he’s not a post player either,” the former Celtics star explained. In his view, James should now focus on playmaking rather than scoring — a shift that could clash with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, who are currently leading the offense.
For Pierce, the Lakers’ future depends on a tough decision: keep LeBron as a franchise icon or start rebuilding around younger talent. He suggested that trading James could bring valuable draft picks or young players, helping the team prepare for long-term success.
Meanwhile, LeBron continues his recovery, aiming for a return soon. But Pierce’s comments have reignited a debate that both fans and the Lakers’ front office can no longer ignore.
