Cooper Flagg entered the NBA as one of the most anticipated prospects of the season, after being selected first overall by the Dallas Mavericks. The young forward faced immediate pressure to fill the offensive void left by Luka Doncic. However, early concerns weren’t about his scoring ability but about his defensive readiness. After watching him throughout the preseason, Kendrick Perkins completely dismissed those doubts.

Flagg played four preseason games, averaging 11.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. While his stats may not stand out, Perkins emphasized that Flagg’s impact goes far beyond the numbers. On the Road Trippin’ podcast, the former Boston Celtics player explained that Flagg’s combination of athleticism, agility, and defensive mindset makes him a crucial piece for Dallas.

According to The Sports Rush, Perkins stated: “He’s too long, too athletic… Most of the time, Jason Kidd will simplify things and switch everything anyway.”

A talent with generational potential

Perkins acknowledged that Flagg still has a lot to learn, especially in one-on-one battles and low-post defense. However, he believes the rookie’s natural instincts and shot-blocking ability will soon make him an elite defender. “His ability to block shots, chase them down, even if someone gets by him, I think he’s going to have that kind of impact,” Perkins added.

The former player also reminded listeners that some early projections ranked Flagg 52nd among the best players for the 2025-26 season. For Perkins, that ranking will rise quickly: “He can finish at the rim—he’s a generational talent.”

With veterans like Anthony Davis, P.J. Washington, and Dereck Lively II around him, the Mavericks have built a solid defensive structure. If Flagg learns from them, he could become a top-tier two-way player. The young star has the physique, mindset, and environment to grow into the next big name in the NBA
