In the NBA, millions fly around like no-look passes. But Jonathan Kuminga decided to stop the clock and bet on something more valuable: his autonomy. The 22-year-old forward for the Golden State Warriors turned down a $45 million offer for two seasons. Not out of whim, but out of conviction. The deal included a team option for the second year and a no-trade clause that, according to sources close to the situation, Kuminga wasn’t willing to accept.

The news, reported by Tim Kawakami in The San Francisco Standard, shook the Golden State landscape. The journalist stated that, despite efforts to negotiate a sign-and-trade deal, the Warriors plan to keep Jonathan Kuminga on the roster for the start of the 2025–26 season. The most likely scenario is that Kuminga signs the qualifying offer of $7.9 million for one year, which would make him an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

Strong numbers

Jonathan Kuminga, who averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists last season, has shown steady growth since being selected seventh overall in the 2021 Draft. His athleticism, defensive versatility, and offensive explosiveness make him a valuable asset. Still, his role has been inconsistent under Steve Kerr’s system. The arrival of Jimmy Butler has added more competition on the wings, which could further limit Kuminga’s minutes.

On social media, Jonathan Kuminga made his stance clear with a phrase that sums up his mindset: “I’ll bet on myself all day,” posted alongside a photo with his agent. That statement isn’t just confidence — it’s a signal that the player is willing to take the long road if it means keeping control of his future.

Multiple teams interested

According to reports from the New York Post, teams like the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns have shown interest in acquiring Jonathan Kuminga. However, the trade packages offered haven’t convinced the Warriors. Team owner Joe Lacob remains a strong supporter of Kuminga and reportedly isn’t willing to let him go without getting real value in return.

The situation is tense, but not hostile. Jonathan Kuminga wants more spotlight, more minutes, and more contractual respect. The Warriors, meanwhile, seem open to giving him another shot — but with conditions. What’s clear is that Kuminga has raised the stakes. It’s no longer just about talent; it’s about power, vision, and strategy.

The 2025–26 season will be a true test. Jonathan Kuminga will be playing for himself, but also for his future. And the Warriors, while holding on to him, know the clock is ticking.
