Jeremy Lin, former New York Knicks player, officially announced his retirement from professional basketball. He spent 15 years on the court, 9 of them in the NBA. However, he believes it is time to step aside and give opportunities to new players.

On Saturday night, Lin shared his decision on Instagram, and his fans reacted quickly, recognizing how hard it is for someone with such a long career to walk away.

An emotional farewell for his followers

According to the New York Post, Jeremy Lin wrote: “As athletes, we always know that retirement is never far away… I’ve spent my 15-year career knowing this day would come, and yet, saying goodbye to basketball today has been the hardest decision I’ve ever made.”

The 37-year-old ex-NBA player averaged 11.6 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.1 steals in 480 games. He added: “So many people have sacrificed and poured into my journey, more than I could ever repay… Thank you all for believing in me, for walking with me, for celebrating my highs, and for lifting me up in my lows. This is a journey I never wanted to end, but I know it’s time.”

Lin also admitted he would deeply miss the game: “I will always miss playing basketball in front of all of you, but our time goes beyond just playing. This is what lies ahead.”

In 2010, Lin signed with the Golden State Warriors, where he played 29 games before being waived. His breakout came with the New York Knicks in the 2011-12 season, when he averaged 14.6 points, 6.2 assists, and 1.6 steals in 35 games.

After that, Lin played for five other NBA teams, including a brief stint with the Nets. His NBA career ended in 2019 with the Toronto Raptors, when he won his first and only championship. Later, he joined the Chinese Basketball Association, where he played from 2019-20 through 2022-23.
