Damian Lillard is back where it all began—Weber State University—but this time with a new mission. While recovering from a torn Achilles tendon in his left foot, Lillard has decided to take on a new challenge off the court. On Saturday, he announced his new role as general manager of the basketball program at his alma mater, a move that reflects his deep commitment to the development of young talent and the success of the team that launched his career.

Despite his current injury, Lillard recently signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers, the NBA franchise where he made his name as a nine-time All-Star. While he remains under contract with the team, he’s using his recovery period to give back to the program that shaped him as a player and person.

A comeback that could be a golden opportunity

According to the New York Post report, during an alumni event at Weber State, held in Ogden, Utah, Lillard made his new position official. He expressed his deep connection to the school and the basketball program: “My relationship with Coach Eric Duft and this program means a lot to me. Seeing the program succeed is something I truly care about.”

Lillard also shared his passion for mentorship and development: “I feel I can do a lot to help the program succeed. I want to guide the players, even individually, and help them grow their careers beyond college. That’s something I’m really passionate about.”

The challenge ahead is not a small one. The Weber State Wildcats ended their last season with a 12–22 record and have not qualified for the NCAA Tournament since 2016. However, Lillard sees this as an opportunity rather than a setback. With his leadership, experience, and motivation, he aims to revitalize the program and lead the Wildcats back to national relevance.

His return to Weber State is more than a sentimental gesture—it’s a bold step toward building something meaningful and lasting, both for the university and the players he now helps guide.
