Molly Qerim will reappear as a sports commentator on Wednesday night. After her surprising departure from ESPN in early September, she now seems ready to get back to what she does best.
Two weeks ago, Qerim announced she was leaving ESPN, where she hosted First Take. The decision caught her followers off guard, as Sports Business Journal had recently reported she would leave at the end of the year. Following that leak, she chose to step away earlier.
A long-awaited return for fans
According to the New York Post, Molly Qerim shocked fans on September 15 with an Instagram story announcing her decision: “After much reflection, I’ve decided it’s time to close this incredible chapter and step away from First Take.” She had been part of the show since 2015.
She followed her farewell message by saying: “Hosting this show has been one of the greatest honors of my career. Every morning, I had the privilege of sharing the desk with some of the brightest, most passionate, and entertaining voices in sports, and with all of you—the best fans in the world… I’m forever grateful for what this journey has given me: lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and the chance to be part of something truly special. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for welcoming me into your homes.”

Her colleague Stephen A. Smith voiced his disappointment over her departure, calling her “a huge part of our success for a decade.” He also revealed that a contract dispute with ESPN’s Burke Magnus led to her exit after negotiations failed.
Now, Qerim will appear Wednesday night at the Student Union Theatre on UConn’s Storrs campus, where she will host a Q&A session with men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley.
As for her replacement on First Take, ESPN content president Burke Magnus admitted they have not yet found one. He explained the show will go through a 30–45 day trial period with rotating hosts before deciding on a permanent choice.
