The relationship between Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso has always fascinated Formula 1 followers. Both drivers share a genuine admiration that transcends generations and driving styles. Each one recognizes a similar character in the other. They also identify a particular way of competing in a sport shaped by rigid structures. That connection resurfaced before the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where they met in the official press conference and explained in detail the reasons behind their mutual respect.

The Dutchman surprised everyone when he recalled his youth. He admitted that he supported Fernando Alonso during the 2010 and 2012 title fights against Sebastian Vettel, back when he was only a teenager watching races from home. His honesty drew attention because Red Bull, Vettel’s team at the time, would later give Verstappen the biggest opportunity of his career.

A bond built on character and authenticity

According to Mundo Deportivo report, Max explained his reasons clearly. He said he always appreciated Alonso’s mindset. He also valued his authenticity and his direct way of competing. He remembered seeing him as a driver who fought with fewer resources against a superior project.

He expressed it this way: “I love Fernando’s mentality and his personality. He’s usually the same. He’s easy to deal with. What you see is what you get. And before I reached F1… maybe it sounds a bit funny, but when Fernando was fighting Red Bull, I supported him and wanted him to do well. He was the underdog, getting results and wins when he shouldn’t. That attracts you as a driver. He’s a fighter and I respect what he’s doing at his age. (Looks at him) Sorry (smiles). I love seeing that passion, that he still has so much passion for this sport.”

His remarks followed Alonso’s own reflection. The Spaniard recalled the challenges of competing in a sport with a strong British culture. He explained how many drivers don’t fit that mold. He even pointed out that some profiles aren’t politically correct. He also highlighted that Verstappen reflects that same personality, saying he noticed it from Max’s early karting days. He described him as a fighter capable of performing in any category.

The Dutchman had expressed this admiration in earlier interviews. He said Alonso never gives up. He also noted that the Spaniard remains motivated at 44. He added that Alonso’s example helps him through difficult moments. He stressed that Alonso could have many more titles with winning cars. He also said that only a few drivers can match his versatility. His praise closed an exchange that confirmed the respect between them.
