Brian Grant, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, is currently facing a serious legal battle. U.S. authorities arrested and charged him with second-degree murder following a deadly incident at his second residence in Oak Island, North Carolina.
According to The Sun, Oak Island police officers responded to reports of gunshots coming from inside Grant’s home. Upon entering the property, they discovered the lifeless body of 61-year-old Randy Stewart, who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Authorities immediately identified Brian Grant as the main suspect and alleged shooter.
Following the discovery, officers took Grant into custody and transported him to jail, where he remains without the right to post bail, according to official jail records. Law enforcement launched a full investigation to clarify the events that led to the shooting.
Attorney claims self-defense
Grant’s legal defense claims the shooting was an act of self-defense. A representative from the District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the incident occurred at Grant’s second residence, and that authorities are reviewing the case in detail.

Grant’s attorney strongly denied the second-degree murder charge, emphasizing that his client has no prior criminal record and lives with his wife and two young children. He described Grant as a responsible man who acted to protect himself during a dangerous confrontation.
According to the defense, Grant and Stewart got into an argument that quickly escalated. During the altercation, Stewart allegedly placed a knife to Grant’s throat. Feeling threatened, Grant allegedly responded by firing a gunshot. WRAL News reported that body camera footage shows Grant telling officers that Stewart had threatened him with a knife.
On Thursday, Brian Grant appeared before Brunswick County Court, where the judge confirmed his detention. He is scheduled to appear again on August 11, when the case will continue to unfold.
The investigation remains active, and further developments are expected in the coming weeks as authorities examine the evidence and witness testimonies.
