Canelo Alvarez has other priorities
Jake Paul took to social media to vent his frustration, accusing Alvarez of backing out. The Mexican boxer simply responded that he only fights “real boxers,” igniting even more controversy.
Instead, Canelo Alvarez has chosen to face Terence Crawford. The reasons behind the super-middleweight champion’s decision to decline Paul’s offer are now clear.
No signed contract
According to journalist Ariel Helwani, the “agreement” between the two fighters wasn’t an actual contract. It was more of a framework to explore the possibilities, seeing if it would suit Canelo Alvarez, the reigning world champion.
“They had a signed agreement with Canelo Alvarez to continue discussions about this fight. That’s the document Jake Paul showed in his video. It wasn’t a signed contract per se—it was an agreement to negotiate in good faith within a set timeframe,” Helwani explained on The Ariel Helwani Show podcast.
What went wrong?
Helwani also noted that Jake Paul might have misunderstood the situation. He revealed that one of the sticking points was broadcast rights. Jake’s team had pushed for the fight to air on Netflix, but the idea didn’t appeal to Canelo Alvarez.
Reportedly, the Mexican champ preferred the pay-per-view model. Jake Paul’s insistence on a Netflix deal caused a rift, and Canelo decided not to proceed.
Canelo Alvarez has been firm in shutting down any future prospects of a fight with Jake Paul. “People, don’t believe anything, especially not this lousy YouTuber. I only fight real fighters. Don’t mess with Canelo. Let’s go,” the Mexican icon declared, putting any lingering doubts—and possibilities—to rest.
