Josh Allen spent three seasons with the Wyoming Cowboys before making the leap to the NFL in 2018. His rise from an unheralded recruit at Reedley College to one of the league’s most dominant figures is a story of perseverance and talent. At Wyoming, Allen threw for more than 5,000 yards and 44 touchdowns. Leaving a mark so strong that the university decided to retire his number.

The ceremony took place before the game against Nevada in Week 13 of the college football season. Josh Allen, joined by his wife Hailee Steinfeld, thanked teammates and fans for the recognition. “It’s an incredible honor, a huge blessing,” he said, as reported by Firstsportz.

The jab at the Rams

True to his competitive nature, Josh Allen closed his speech with a joke aimed at the Colorado State Rams, Wyoming’s historic rivals in the so-called “Border War.” “It will always suck to be a CSU Rams fan,” he quipped, drawing laughs. He reminded everyone that during his college career he went 2-0 against them, piling up more than 300 passing yards and over 100 rushing yards in those matchups.

The rivalry between the Cowboys and Rams dates back to 1911. Although Colorado State leads the all-time series, Wyoming has won eight of the last ten meetings, including a 28-0 shutout this season. Josh Allen’s comment reinforced the competitive identity that has followed him since his college days.

From Firebaugh to Buffalo

The journey of Josh Allen to the NFL was far from easy. After excelling at Firebaugh High School, he received no Division I offers and had to turn to Junior College. His stint at Reedley College put him on Wyoming’s radar, where he eventually developed into a first-round prospect.

In 2018, Josh Allen was selected seventh overall by the Bills, in the same draft class as Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson. Since then, Allen has built a legacy in Buffalo. More than 29,000 passing yards, 213 touchdown passes, and 75 rushing scores. He also holds an 83-38 record as a starter and multiple playoff appearances.

A legacy that transcends

The retirement of his jersey at Wyoming not only recognizes his numbers but also his cultural and sporting impact. Josh Allen embodies the perseverance of a player who “bloomed where he was planted,” as his family motto said. His story resonates with Cowboys fans and Bills supporters alike, who see in him a leader capable of blending talent with character.

And, true to his style, the quarterback turned the ceremony into a moment of pride and rivalry. Josh Allen showed once again that his legacy is measured not only in statistics but also in the passion he inspires.
