Draymond Green, the defensive heartbeat of the Golden State Warriors, is once again making headlines. In his 14th NBA season, the four-time champion opened up about his future and the possibility of retirement. He loves basketball deeply but feels the pressure of how long he can keep playing.
In an interview with The Athletic, Green revealed what he’s thinking about for the near future. So far, the veteran is averaging 8.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 6.1 assists this season. He’s also shooting a career-best 44.4% from three-point range. At 34, he remains a key part of Steve Kerr’s system, valued for both his defensive intensity and leadership.
His passion for basketball keeps him going
According to Athlon Sports, Green said: “I don’t know what that exact number is, but I do know that I still really enjoy what comes with this. And as long as I enjoy it, and can go through that process and give what I need to give to be at an elite level, I don’t foresee a reason to tie my shoes and throw them over the telephone wire yet. I still enjoy it too much. And I’m healthy. So add enjoyment with health, and those two things can make it a little harder to walk away.”
Draymond Green says NBA players treat games against the Warriors like it’s the Finals
“You’re always going to have guys that step up and just play out of their minds. That is the Warrior effect, that is the effect you get when you have had the success that we have. You figure a… pic.twitter.com/ZsBnlLsqig— NBACentral (@TheDunkCentral) November 4, 2025
Green signed a four-year, $100 million extension with the Warriors in 2023. He holds a player option for 2026-27, but his commitment to the franchise remains firm. “I’m in a space where I can see this completely through one lens, and that’s ‘How’s basketball?’ That’s the routine, what I’m giving, the competition every night. Coming out of it, how do I feel mentally and physically? All of that is still very intact. So that’s the only lens I need to look through right now,” he said.
His comments come at a crucial time. Golden State is fighting to regain consistency after a rough start that included consecutive losses threatening their position in the Western Conference. Green, however, stays composed and confident.
A nine-time All-Defense selection and former Defensive Player of the Year, Green’s impact goes far beyond the box score — he remains the emotional engine of a dynasty that has defined the past decade.
For now, Draymond can’t picture himself walking away. “As long as I enjoy it… I don’t foresee a reason to tie my shoes,” he said.
