Mac Jones won the hearts of millions of fans with an unexpected gesture. It happened during the San Francisco 49ers’ 34-24 victory over the New York Giants. His action stunned everyone in attendance after completing 19 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns, posting a 135.2 passer rating.

The quarterback endured multiple hits and was visibly exhausted. That’s why he chose to substitute himself, allowing teammate Adrian Martínez to take the final snap of the game.

A meaningful lesson

According to Firstsportz, when the win was secured, Jones asked the backup to enter the field. Martínez knelt in the victory formation, marking his first official NFL play.

“[Coach] Kyle [Shanahan] had already taken off his headset, and I said, ‘Come on! Come on, Adrian!’ So I just subbed myself out, sneaked to the sideline… but I was happy. They wanted Adrian to be out there. Once we took the knee, I definitely wanted him out there,” Jones explained after the game.

The gesture was celebrated by fans and teammates alike. Martínez, a former Nebraska and Kansas State quarterback, had waited patiently for his chance since joining the league. After going undrafted in 2023, he spent time with the Detroit Lions and became the 2024 UFL Championship MVP before signing with the 49ers.

His brief appearance, though symbolic, meant a lot to a player who has fought to earn a place in professional football. For Jones, it was a quiet act of leadership — one that showed what it truly means to be a teammate.

The victory also reinforced the 49ers’ strong form, as they continue to stand out as one of the most complete teams in the NFL. Despite taking heavy punishment, Jones demonstrated maturity and empathy, qualities rarely seen in the league.
