Patrick Mahomes rarely hesitates. But on Sunday in Buffalo, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback had a night to forget. In the 28-21 loss to the Bills, Mahomes delivered one of the weakest performances of his career. He completed just 15 of 34 passes, threw an interception, and didn’t manage a single touchdown pass. According to The New York Post, it was the first time in nine seasons that Mahomes failed to surpass a 50% completion rate in a regular-season game.

The setback hit hard, especially because the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes had been on the rise. With three straight wins and five victories in their last six games, the team seemed to be finding its groove. But Buffalo proved to be his kryptonite once again. That’s five consecutive regular-season losses to the Bills, despite a perfect 4-0 playoff record against them since 2020.

Visible frustration

Patrick Mahomes didn’t sugarcoat it: “We have to be more consistent as a team. I have to be more consistent as a quarterback.” His frustration was clear in the fourth quarter, when he threw three straight incompletions from Buffalo’s 40-yard line. Earlier, rookie Maxwell Hairston had picked him off, sealing Kansas City’s second-to-last possession.

The Bills’ defense was relentless. They sacked Patrick Mahomes three times and hit him 15 times throughout the game. Meanwhile, Josh Allen shined with 273 yards, three touchdowns, and an 88% completion rate—a franchise record. “Josh was incredible,” Mahomes admitted. “You know everything comes down to a few plays, and today they made them.”

Must win

Despite the rough outing, Patrick Mahomes had a few bright spots: a 29-yard pass on fourth-and-17 that led to a Kareem Hunt touchdown, and a 40-yard strike to Hollywood Brown that put the Chiefs at Buffalo’s 1-yard line before halftime. But the negatives outweighed the positives, including another interception in the second quarter and multiple drives that ended in field goals. Andy Reid summed it up: “Against a team like this, you have to score touchdowns. Not field goals.”

With a 5-4 record, the Chiefs head into their bye week before facing the division-leading Denver Broncos (7-2). Patrick Mahomes knows what’s coming: “It’ll be an uphill battle when we return. But I believe my guys are ready for it.”
