The Cincinnati Bengals enter Week 9 surrounded by uncertainty as they prepare to face the Chicago Bears. Quarterback Joe Flacco battles a sprained throwing shoulder, and his injury puts his availability in serious doubt. Refusing to take risks, the coaching staff develops two separate game plans to stay ready for any outcome before kickoff.

Offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher confirmed the team’s dual approach. “We’re getting ready for either scenario,” he said, acknowledging that Jake Browning may start if Flacco doesn’t recover in time. Throughout the week, the Bengals focus on flexibility, running extra reps for Browning and adjusting their offensive rhythm to maintain stability in case of a sudden lineup change.

A costly injury at the worst possible time

According to Essentiallysports, Flacco sustained the injury during last week’s 39-38 loss to the New York Jets, a game the Bengals once led by 15 points. The defense collapsed in the final quarter, surrendering 23 unanswered points and wasting a comfortable lead. The defeat damaged the team’s record and intensified the pressure on a roster already coping with injuries and inconsistent performances.

Without Flacco, the Bengals lose a veteran leader who stabilizes their offense with his experience, precision, and calm under pressure. His presence remains essential against a Chicago defense famous for its physical play and ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks.

Pitcher expressed full confidence in Browning’s readiness. “Jake’s been ready all season,” he said. “He knows the system, and we trust him to execute.” Despite the uncertainty, the coaching staff stays composed, knowing that Cincinnati needs a win to stay alive in the AFC playoff race.

The medical staff will monitor Flacco daily and make a final decision before game day, hoping his recovery progresses enough for him to start. Whether Flacco or Browning leads the offense, the Bengals must show discipline and resilience to avoid another late-game collapse. Their playoff hopes depend on how they respond now.
