On Sunday, the LSU Tigers fired head coach Brian Kelly following their 49-25 loss to the Texas A&M Aggies. The 2025 season started poorly for the program, which now holds a 5-3 record. Fans and analysts were frustrated by LSU’s offensive struggles, while the defense performed well but could not prevent the lopsided defeat. Allowing nearly 50 points exposed critical weaknesses in the Tigers’ strategy.

According to Athlonsports, LSU announced on Monday that offensive coordinator Joe Sloan was also dismissed. Sloan had been with the program since 2022, initially serving as the quarterbacks coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2024. Under his leadership, LSU’s offense has struggled to produce consistent results. The team currently ranks 14th out of 16 in the SEC in total offense, averaging just 355.5 yards per game. In conference scoring, they are 12th with 25.5 points per game, reflecting an underwhelming offensive output.

Struggles in both the ground and air game

LSU’s rushing attack has been almost non-existent, accumulating only 85 yards through the season, ranking last in the SEC. Their passing game is stronger but still modest, placing 7th in the conference. These numbers underscore the urgent need for a major offensive overhaul, especially after the departures of Kelly and Sloan.

With both the head coach and offensive coordinator positions vacant, LSU must act quickly to secure experienced leadership. Athletic director Scott Woodward carries the responsibility of hiring replacements who can restore the team’s competitive edge and push them back into contention for a national championship.

Interim leadership for the next matchup

The Tigers will face a formidable opponent in the Alabama Crimson Tide, currently ranked fourth. Frank Wilson will step in as interim head coach for the November 8 game. This matchup will be a critical test for LSU as the program seeks to stabilize and begin rebuilding momentum in the SEC. Fans will watch closely to see if the team can respond to these significant leadership changes and start turning around its disappointing season.
